PYP - English as an Additional Language (EAL) Program

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) program is available for students who are in need of English support. Teachers asess individual student needs at the beginning of the school year, or on arrival at ISSR, to determine how to best support students. The format to the program is a combination of pull-out and push-in instruction.

Pull-out: Children are pulled-out of the homeroom class to attend lessons with the EAL instructor on a scheduled basis to target specific language goals at the level of the student. This small-classroom situation provides a safe learning environment for students to practice speaking skills, ask questions and received individualized instruction.

Push-in: The EAL instruction pushes in to the homeroom class where EAL children are and provides support for them in the context of the content that is being studied in the homeroom environment. The homeroom teacher and EAL instructor will work actively together to plan and strategize how to best assist children during these lessons where a second teacher is present in the classroom.
